•Although received not as a commandment, as early as 1834 the prophet Joseph Smith had established obedience to the Word of Wisdom as a requirement to hold leadership
positions (See Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.117 footnote)
•President Brigham Young presented a motion to accept the Word of Wisdom as a commandment on September 9, 1851
